Netflix’s top contender this year is a Spanish-language epic from Los Javis (filmmakers Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi) that spans a century — from the 1930s to 2017 — to tell three intertwined stories of the LGBTQ experience in Spain. La Bola Negra has already won top awards on the festival circuit, including a best director prize at Cannes for Los Javis and the coveted audience award at the Toronto International Film Festival (the first non-English language film to win in 15 years and the first-ever Netflix movie to take the crown).
