Tom Cruise’s big swing is the first theatrical release from Alejandro González Iñárritu since 2015’s The Revenant (his follow-up, Bardo, was a Netflix project). In the disaster comedy, Cruise stars as Digger Rockwell, an infamous oil tycoon who inadvertently starts a global catastrophe and tries to help the U.S. government work its way out of trouble. Digger skipped the fall festivals and Warner Bros. kept its early screenings to a minimum to avoid spoilers about its plot twists from leaking into the atmosphere — but while early word was polarizing, the expectation is that Cruise will be a formidable contender for best actor.
